Carolyn Violet Jakes discovered a new love - a passion for painting, when she took an art class in 1993. This strong desire to paint is now a driving force in her life.
Her first art show, which included 47 paintings, was held May 20-22, 2000, at the Knock on Wood Gallery in the village of Calabogie, Ontario, Canada, which is a four season resort area on Calabogie Lake.
Carolyn's Ukrainian heritage is evident in many pieces of her work. The Christian symbols, found on the traditional Ukrainian painted eggs or pysanky, can be seen on her painted wooded eggs. Each egg is a unique creation. These ancient Christian symbols are also often found in her watercolours, such as "Eternity" and "The Dancers", which are available as reproductions.
Carolyn has applied the monotype technique for many of her watercolours. This involves layering watercolours on a piece of glass, placing a wet piece of paper over the dried paint, and applying enough pressure to the paper and glass to allow the paint to transfer to the paper.
As a full-time artist, she finds great joy in experimenting extensively with various media and techniques, taking art courses, studying art just for the love of learning, and teaching others to use art to express themselves creatively. House guests, who show any interest at all, find themselves using a paint brush and taking a creative happening home - a floral watercolour, a painted egg or an acrylic abstract.
Carolyn, who lives on the north shore of Calabogie Lake, has spent most of her life in the field of education. Her colourful career in education included such jobs as classroom teacher, television teacher, media consultant and school principal over a 22-year period with the Ontario school system in Canada, and education specialist and director of training support services in the Canadian federal government for the
following 13 years. Throughout her career, she designed and delivered workshops to school principals, teachers, trainers and community groups on a variety of topics including strategic planning, time management and communication skills. At the international level, she taught management courses and training for the trainer courses in Europe and Asia.
Setting goals and preparing and implementing action plans are second nature to Carolyn, who is blessed with a very high level of energy. She is currently enrolled, as a part-time student, in Sir Sanford Fleming College's School of the Arts in Haliburton, Ontario to acquire her Visual and Creative Arts Diploma. Then, she plans to complete a third university degree, this one in Fine Arts. Her plan is then to
paint half time and to teach painting half time. She believes that she was born to teach. |
